As a follow up to my post on the Sony Ericsson S500i below. Today SEMC have released a set of guidelines for developers that want to create Flash Lite content for their JP-8 phones.
Clearly some of these guidelines are good for any Flash Lite development, see it here.
Thanks to everyone who has sent in their IMEI # requesting the Flash Lite 3 developer edition. Because there has been a huge demand for the Flash Lite 3 developer edition it is taking us longer than expected to get everyone’s IMEIs included and certified. This delay is unfortunate but because of this delay we have had time to add improvements to the Flash Lite 3 developer edition including faster FLV playback so you’ll notice an even better experience when playing back that type of content on supported devices.
Supported devices that developers can use for testing are any Nokia Symbian S60 3rd edition or newer device. For example our reference device for testing and doing demos is the Nokia N95.
The Flash Lite 3 developer edition is only a standalone player and will allow developers to test and play back SWF files that are published as Flash Lite 3. The Flash Lite 3 developer edition is not supported in the web browser as a plug-in and is not able to run wallpaper or screensavers, that requires OEM level integration. The first mobile phones with Flash Lite 3 pre-installed and browser plugin, screensaver and wallpaper functionality will be from Nokia in Q1 2008.
Our new tentative date for having the player sent out to requesters is by the end of November if not sooner. Again we’re sorry for the delay and appreciate in your patience but believe the wait will be worth it.
Yesterday at the Adobe offices in Barcelona we completed a Flash Lite 3 training course with five people are now certified trainers in Europe! I’ll be naming them soon, not to worry
While I was in Barcelona I met with some fantastic content developers from various companies working on everything from Flash Lite 1.1 to Flash Lite 3. It’s always great to see people working hard and being successful using Flash Lite 1.1 to create cool connected applications that operate on even the lowest end handsets.
Peformance came up again and so I’m going to be releasing some in-house documentation in my examples section really soon. The data comes via an internal project where we needed to learn the best ways to write code for what are now low end devices.
Also on the internet, Richard Leggett has written a great article on Flash Lite and his experiences and thoughts for the future. This has done the rounds at Adobe and resulted in a trail of interesting comments. Go see it here.
SEMC have taken their support for Flash Lite and pushed the boat out with this amazing experience. Its easily the best overall experience including Flash Lite that I’ve seen by an OEM.
But guess what… They are opening it up to the community allowing you to build your own themes! I’ll be posting hopefully very soon on how to do just that…
As an aside I’d like to point out that building a phone UI in Flash is hard due to the level of device OS integration needed. It is for this reason that I am particularly impressed by this device as SEMC have clearly cracked the problem. This allows for more expressive and personalised experiences on devices created by creative professionals or even by the end user.
Samsung, LG and others already have Flash Lite UIs and even Nokia are also entering the field by using Flash Lite for their S40 music player. These are all key indications that the knowledge is growing, the technology is bedding in and that our partners are beginning to see the Flash community as an asset.
Well MAX Barcelona was a great adventure, despite my laptop going crazy and some of our demos not working I managed to pull off a presentation. Bill also introduced me formally during his session, the final unveiling!
Speaking to the community at MAX I got a real feel for the creativity, capability and commitment from the developers in Europe. I spoke to all sorts of shops that produce everything from Flex web applications, Flash Lite 1.x-2.x content developers and aggregators to university lecturers.
One thing is clear, each and every person really wants the ecosystem to grow and get better. We hosted an evening for mobile developers and heard about their ideas, pain points and what they want from us in the future.
Rest assured, we are working on it!
Flash Cast and Flash Home also seem to be getting alot of attention, Flash Cast particularly as we are working on a solution announced last year with Telenor and the news is out, it’s going to be huge.
